So, in order to save the environment from such damages, it is better to use natural hair tools.
2. Can prevent side effects
Chemically made products are known to produce side effects. Everyone’s hair is different, and all chemical compositions do not suit all types of hair. Therefore, while using chemically made products, one should be very careful. Hair products with lots of chemicals are also known to be highly toxic for the health, where the toxins can creep into the skin through the scalp.
Save yourself from the artificial smell:
Chemical products often release a beautiful smell. But did you know that this artificial smell is added to the products in order to cover up the pungent smell of other chemicals which are used? This artificial smell is created by concentrated chemicals and it can cause headaches and may lead to temporary loss of smell. Therefore, always use natural products as they smell like its natural ingredients.
Natural products can be used for a long time
It is no secret that natural products have no side effects. Due to the use of natural ingredients, side effects are limited. Hence, when using natural products for a long time your hair gets progressively better. Therefore, if you are looking to take care of your hair in the long run, always use natural hair tools.
Natural Hair Art:

We always try to improve our appearance in society. The way you look impacts our self-esteem and self confidence. And if we are not happy with our looks we tend to escape gatherings and try to hide our shortcomings.
Hair problems are something which most of us face as we tend to age. With age, we face various hair problems like hair loss, graying of our hair, hair shrinkage and many more. All these issues affect our confidence in a major way. Therefore, we always try to maintain the way we look in order to improve our ability to ‘show up’ to the occasion, so to speak.
In this post, we will discuss a few of the causes of hair shrinkage and how we can avoid them.
Causes of Natural Hair Shrinkage
One of the main concerns which most women have is the fact that they must deal with their natural hair shrinkage. Hair shrinkage is a good sign, however many don’t like it because it makes the hair look shorter, and it makes it difficult to have that ‘long hair don’t care’ look.
When the hair is wet or is moist, the weight of the water in the hair brings down the hair and it’s at that time when seems the hair is of good length. The weight of the water absorbed by the hair makes it hang downwards and hence making the hair look longer. But when the hair dries up, the weight of the water disappears and then the hair starts to shrink up and it makes the length look shorter. Especially for women with curly hair, the shrinkage is more visible. There are times when women with curly hair appear to have had a major haircut off their hair dried and the shrinkage kicks in.
For a few women, they embrace this natural hair shrinkage but for just as many, they try various products to ensure that the hair length is maintained.
A lot of women who do not like hair shrinkage, tend to use hair shrinkage products which are chemically-based. These chemically-based products are not at all good for the hair and in the long run, it will to hair loss and hair greying.
So, how can you maintain the length of the hair without using chemicals or other harsh treatments?
The answer is simple. Go the natural way. There are lots of products on the market like natural hair shrinkage products by Amtu Hair Art & Tools that can eliminate the shrinkage without the long term damage. As the story goes, Samson, a very strong and powerful man and the final judge of Israel, fell in love with a woman named Delilah, where he revealed to her that the source of his power came from his hair. Delilah eventually went on to betray him by cutting his hair while he lay asleep to fulfill a bribe for money. As one reflects on the story of Samson and Deliah, it brings to mind the natural hair movement and the empowerment in taking on the natural hair journey. Nonetheless, it also makes one reflect on the subjugation felt when forced to chemically alter one’s hair for professional survival and the loss of empowerment felt when succumbing society’s pressure to adhere to certain eurocentric beauty standards.
Hair has played a significant role in the culture of ancient African civilizations, which has been carried on through their folklore. In exploring the role of hair in both Africa and Indigenous cultures, it can make one wonder if there is something far more mysterious and magical about hair that we have yet to unveil.
In cultures across Africa, hair is a notable symbol for fertility. If a woman has thick and long hair, it signals her good health and ability to birth healthy children. In addition, many African communities as well as indigenous communities around the world view hair as like a portal on the body with the ability to transmit divine communication. It's this belief that has also led many to entrust their hairstylist to be close relatives and not possible enemies, as having access to one’s hair could lead to harm or prosperity through ritual or spells.
For the women in the Himba tribe of Namibia, hair signals maturity and whether one is ready for marriage or not. The teenage girls of the tribe cover their faces with bangs of braided strands or dreadlocked. This particular style indicates that they have entered into puberty. Women who are married and are new to motherhood wear the Erember headdress. The men who are not married wear one braid to display their status as single.
In Native cultures, one’s glory is indicated by the length of one’s hair for both men and women. During the colonization of indigenous people, a form of oppression and defeat was to cut the hair of an indigenous person. This was a form of deep humiliation. The significance of one’s hair in native culture connects to one’s mental navigation. The method by which one combs their hair aligns with their thought process, one braid represents the Oneness of thought, tying the hair is the securing of the thought, and the darkness in the color of the hair symbolizes the conviction held within their thought.
In the native culture the hair also is worn according to the tone of the occasion, whether it is for a funeral, marriage or your tribal status. The way the hair is worn also indicates the tribe one belongs to, in addition to whether one will enter a battle or peace. The spiritual representation in which the hair is worn among indigenous people connect to their power from divine source.
In parts of Asia, during the time of Gengis Khan, forcing individuals to cover their forehead with bangs was used as a form of punishment because bangs represented covering the 3rd eye, their intuition.
As an energy conductor, one’s hair is the transporter of the body’s electromagnetic energy. In other words, the hair on one’s head is similar to that of an antennae, it transports energy into the body. In addition to taking in information, hair can also emit energy patterns and frequencies into the environment. There are so many powerful and magical connections that one’s hair holds. It can make one wonder why suppressing the natural hair beauty of many black and indigenous cultures was so pervasive. Was it to suppress their power or the activation of their power? Perhaps when many were stripped of their love for their natural hair, there was an aspect of that power which was stripped as well.
]]>As a team, working with Amtu Hair Art & Tools has been been a value driven experience. That is not to say, it has not been without its obstacles. Nonetheless, the conscious effort to integrate holistic practices within our navigation as entrepreneurs has allowed our experiences to be deeply fulfilling, with many teachable moments, where work is no longer a source of stress but that of joy and transformation. What does this mean? It means not excluding our belief systems from our work systems, but integrating that within every aspect of our lives. Many people believe in order to succeed as an entrepreneur you must separate your ‘God Fearing’ mind from your work mind. This means as soon as you leave the house of God you must transform into a shark in order to successfully swim among sharks and do what is absolutely necessary to win. We deeply disagree with this mentality, and hope to effectively share the reasons why, and how integrating one’s moral and spiritual compass will be the foundation of how businesses will operate in the future.
As a company we work in partnership with other global organizations in our design and manufacturing process. Many of our custom accessories are handmade by a collective of artisans in Nepal. We’ve learned a lot about integrating our holistic practices from our partners overseas. For example, our Nepalese partners shut down their offices during the month of October. October is sacred because it is the month of Dashain & Diwali. Diwali is a festival of lights. It is associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity. People celebrate by lighting clay lamps called 'diyas' around their homes. This signifies the victory of good over evil and that is why Diwali is also known as the festival of lights. It is within this belief, that the light will overcome the darkness. With this in mind, during the period of this season, our Nepalese partners will not accept any orders, it is 100% spirituality & value over money. Therefore, we don’t do any custom handmade orders during the month of October as well. We consciously chose not to challenge this, and to actually adopt this mindset.
The integration of value and holistic practices and allowing that to be used as a tool and a source to enable us to navigate through the rough seas of entrepreneurship has proven to be effective. It encourages us to place value in our customer’s experience, and appreciate the hard work and energy behind the money spent on our products. It allows for transparency in the operations of our business, and to engage and share our mission with our clients. It enables a deep respect for those we work with, and to interact with sincere intention and thoughtfulness. This mindset encourages a practice of spiritual headlights when the pressure appears high. Many on our team and staff members practice meditation and breathing techniques. Many of us are vegan. When the going gets tough, I for one, will increase the amount and time of my meditation. I will nurture my practice with a 15 minute morning yoga body activation, and acquire literature that supports this practice and mindset. I guess you can say, in my world of entrepreneurship, when the going gets tough I double up on my spiritual and philosophical practices to spearhead me through the path. This practice allows me to access the far reaches of my mind in order to be innovative in my design process, for mindful solutions and being a driving force with sincere intentions. It not only allows space for self care and addresses my mental and emotional needs, but it is a source and tools that allows for better business decisions, it places the value and integrity within my work ethics, and is effective in bringing the needed resolutions.
As society and its consumer market becomes more aware of the need and importance of organic products and they see value in these chemical free products, they will also become more aware and seek the remedies for a toxic free life and mentality. They will seek value in the experiences they have as customers to small businesses, and expect those businesses to reflect a level of those values and integrity. They will expect value in the products they purchase, and for these purchases to contribute to their self care and not self destruction with chemicals and/or heat damage. Consumers are beginning to also purchase more products that cater more to their authenticity or innate qualities and not products that nurture a false image or illusory construct sculpted by the society they live in. The idea of infusing social good with business practices is not a new concept, its something Tom Shoes mastered when they informed the public that for every shoe that’s purchased from their company, a pair of shoes will be provided to those in need. This allowed for customers to feel good about their purchase, that they were helping to better the world they lived in simply by buying a pair of shoes, and therefore enhanced the customer’s experience. However, now or what lies before the future, is not just doing a social good but literally becoming the change you want to see, practicing your values in every aspect of your life and encouraging others to do the same even the small businesses you frequent.
In conclusion, we here at Amtu Hair Art & Tools have consciously been committed to placing our values in every aspect of our lives, including within our entrepreneurship. We have decided to allow our holistic practices to be a driving force within our business navigation, and the way we engage our customers. As entrepreneurs and through our value driven approach we consciously transform obstacles into teachable moments. It means we have committed to becoming the change we want to see in society and not just excluding this notion to one day a week or compartmentalizing it to limited aspects of our lives. It is our hope that as citizens begin to transform, so will the institutions, businesses, and organizations that help to sculpt the society we exist in. It is with this perspective that we hope one’s moral and spiritual compass will be the foundation of not only one’s life, or the foundation of small businesses, but will become the driving force within our society and how it operates.

]]>It is so important for the natural hair community to democratize and normalize our natural hair styles and methods. Nonetheless, there is a big difference between normalizing/democratizing natural hair and this thing we call ‘cultural appropriation.’ So lets make clear distinctions between democratizing/normalizing natural hair vs appropriating it. The democratization and normalization of natural hair is to encourage the conversion of more individuals to take the natural hair leap, to fill the work-spaces with our natural hair, our public spaces and to desensitize the viewing eye to natural hair. It is to exchange beauty tips, styling methods, hair tools, recommend hair accessories, and natural hair methods with non natural hair wearers from various communities and cultures. It is to say, although we wear our hair differently, it doesn’t mean we don’t use the same organic hair products, hair tools, or hair jewelry to dress up or dress down our hair. In other words, to democratize/normalize natural hair is to embrace our similarities as well as our differences, and to have an honest and open dialogue about it. On the contrary, to appropriate natural hair culture is to exploit it, it is to refrain from an honest conversation on natural hair, it is to commodify it without empowering it or the cultures affiliated with it.
The ability for a black owned business to create products for natural hair wearers, products that contain the intricate details, the functional needs that make the natural hair life that much easier is a great thing. The ability for this same black owned business to create the same products that meet the specific needs of the natural hair wearers and to be able to sell that same product to customers of various backgrounds and cultures who are not naturalistas, this here is the democratization, the normalization of the natural hair industry and lifestyle. Nonetheless, what this is not, is cultural appropriation. Sometimes it is expected for black owned businesses within the natural hair industry to only sell within their own communities, to have products that reflect only those within the communities. However, the ability for this particular black owned business to expand their customer base to other communities is a great thing. This allows for the black owned businesses to extend the conversation of natural hair and its lifestyle outside the community and into the broader society that we all exist in.
Why is extending the conversation of natural hair into the broader society a good thing? Well, because it doesn’t make the idea of a person wearing their beautiful natural texture such a foreign concept nor does it make the view of this so striking. It reaches and educates various business owners, companies, and institutions and tells them that it is completely normal, professional and should be expected for all people to wear their natural textures including their staff, consultants, management and team. It informs the schools, the teachers, the school coaches and administrators that wearing one’s natural texture whether it be thick, curly, coily, straight, wavy, or a variety of other looks - is perfectly normal, in addition to being one’s right. Essentially, this process further normalizes the experience of natural hair.
The democratization of natural hair empowers black businesses within the natural hair industry. It enables them to have a broader customer base, which further enables their business to not only expand, but to either create or distribute the specific products that meet the particular needs of the natural hair wearer. Let’s be honest, it is only recently, that members of the natural hair community have been empowered to become the makers of their own products within the natural hair industry, and who would better know how to create a natural hair product than the one using them. With all this in mind, it is important for them to be able to sustain their businesses, this means selling to a broader more mainstream consumership. Diverse representation within the beauty and hair industry is essential. The progression of diversity within these industries and the innovative leaps that have been made in developing products for people within the natural hair community allows there to be an experience of chemical free and heat free hair care, and to dump the toxic ingredients.
There has been immense controversy surrounding the term ‘cultural appropriation’ and rightfully so. Cultural appropriation is a form of exclusion, this is done by taking a culture, selling an aspect of that culture and excluding the communities of that culture from the industry or consumership by which that culture is being sold. It is non-members of a culture profiting from the culture being sold and not redistributing some of the profit back within the communities of the source culture. It is the lack of partnership or collaboration with members of the community of the culture that is being commodified. It is a method that further disenfranchises primarily communities of color and sets our society back with regards to equity. The inverse of cultural appropriation is to be an ally of culture, or more specifically to be an ally in business. What exactly does this mean ‘to be an ally in business’? It means to share your resources, information, and tools that are often excluded from people of color who run small business. It means if you’re a non-person of color, support the success of your friend’s black owned business either by purchasing from them, helping them to bring their business to the mainstream, or helping them acquire resources that can bring profit to their business.
In conclusion, there are many benefits to normalizing/democratizing natural hair, it benefits small businesses run by people of color, it benefits the worker who chooses to wear his/her hair natural, it benefits the children, and athletes and many more. As we move further into the future, there are various ways that we can engage the conversations on diversity and inclusion, among them is accepting folks as they are, even something as mundane has hair texture. Nonetheless, it is this very hair texture that is leading in the hair industry of what is identified as Natural Hair. So with all this in mind, it is even more important that the conversations lead to an equitable share in the profits and developments within this natural hair industry, because as we all know economic power is real power within a society.

The beautiful thing about the Hair Weight, is that - it is a tool that is not meant to create just one nice hair style but many, as it is made to train your hair for more length, less shrinkage and great manageability.
The number 1 rule when using the Hair Weights is to leave the weights in long enough to help set the hair which is at a minimum of 2 to 3 hours, and to ONLY remove when the hair is completely dried.
Lorna, (the model in the video below) washed her hair the night before which allowed for enough time for the hair to be semi dry once she placed on the hair weights the following morning.
Once Lorna finished washing her hair she patted it down with a cotton towel (or t-shirt) and dried it as much as possible. She parted her hair in 4 sections. She placed on the appropriate oils (because it was Spring during this time she chose grapeseed oil), she didn’t place too much oil just lightly on the different sections. She then placed her hair in 4 Bantu knots. Then went to sleep.
The next morning she placed her hair in 5 to 6 sections.
Post Wash-Day - Day #3 - Training Hair with Hair Weights Routine
The Night Prep Regimen:
1. 5-8 sections for braidout or twist outs.
2. Place the appropriate oil on sectioned hair (we recommend oils according to the season, view our blog on this at www.amtuhairtools.com)
3. Add a little refresher spray (don't drench your hair only dampen).
4. OPTIONAL - place on gel (some prefer to rebraid hair in the morning and place on gel then for smoother look, but sometimes this isn't time efficient.)
5. OPTIONAL - brush hair (some prefer not to brush before braiding as it may impact their curl pattern.)
6. Braid section and place shea butter at the end of braid.
Morning After Routine:
1. OPTIONAL: Rebraid each seciton with a little gel and shea butter at end of braid, DO NOT ADD REFRESHER SPRAY OR ANY OTHER LIQUID. Then add the hair weights (3 to 4 weights per braid/twist). You will need to diffuse until the gel in the hair is dry, stop diffusing when hair is completely dry. Remove hair weights after 2 - 3 hours.
2. OPTIONAL: If you added gel in the hair during your overnight braidout/twistout, then in the morning keep braids as they are - skip to placing on hair weights (3-4 weights per braid/twist). Place shea butter at end of braid/twist. Keep hair weights in hair 2-3 hours. Lay down your edges in the meantime. After 2-3 hours remove hair weights, and delicately separate curls/waves to your liking, lightly smooth out hair (do not spray any refresher all over hair, if necessary place a little at the ends of the hair).
As you repeat the ‘morning after routine’ above, this is where the training begins, and the consistency is key.

There are thousands upon thousands of blogs, publications, and discussions on natural hair, great products and more. However, there are so few conversations regarding the significance of self-care and how that impacts our health and ultimately our beauty. I'm sure there are many who have heard folks say they were so stressed out that their hair fell out, they loss weight or their backs gave out. These are common physical symptoms of stress and warning signs indicating a need for self-care to prevent dis-ease leading to disease. So today we will discuss a few 15-30 minute exercises and techniques that will effectively reduce the stress in your body. In addition, it is very possible to navigate stressful or even high pressured situations without panic, it’s called ‘a knowing’ that you'll have the same or even better outcome if you learn to respond to those same dynamics with a cool, calm and collected approach.
Let us explore a common outcome of stress which is called Hair Loss. There are three types of hair loss that can be associated with high levels of stress:
Hair loss can be a fairly traumatic experience, it impacts self esteem, and one’s confidence. However, hair loss as a result of stress is just one warning sign among many before a greater and far scarier health issue or breakdown of the body occurs. The ability to preach about living a stress free life is easier said than done, but there are scientifically proven ways that you can use to reduce the stress which are quick, fun and not to mention - relaxing.
One way to reduce stress is meditation. A quick 15 minute moment of meditation has been scientifically proven to be an effective way to reduce stress and add years onto your life. The effects of meditation's ability to drop blood pressure has been referred by the US National Institutes of Health, as the most effective means for helping mild hypertension. Meditation reduces stress level, as relaxation reduces the activity of the adrenal gland.
Breathing methods are another scientifically proven way to reduce stress. A 15 minute breathing technique can induce relaxation as the breathing slows and deepens. The calmness that's felt during these techniques is an indication that the body is under the influence of the parasympathetic nervous system, which produces a relaxing effect.
Walking is by far one of the oldest and most guaranteed ways of reducing stress within the body. Brisk walking for 30 mins boosts endorphins which causes a reduction in the stress hormones and alleviates mild depression. This easy activity can lower your blood pressure, improve your cholesterol, and reduce your blood sugar.
All three of these techniques can not only add length and health to your hair but also to your life. Unfortunately, so many of us have been taught to not prioritize our self-care or to view it as a waste of time and not proactive. Nonetheless, we can’t accomplish any of our goals, complete or navigate any obstacles if we’re not alive due to dis-ease leading to disease. The ability to take the time to reprogram our minds and teach it to prioritize our self care is as important as practicing these techniques. The maintenance of our inner self will surely bring about the beautiful glow we seek in our outer self.

The natural hair movement has experienced an upsurge over the years, with women of all shades and cultures taking on more chemical-free product criteria along with indulging in their innate and unique beauty. Nonetheless, along with the movement, there has been a major welcoming among naturalistas for new and innovative products that will enable their heat-free and chemical free lifestyles. The question has been among the hair-care industry, do we create more hair treatment products for naturalistas to pile onto their hair? As if there isn't enough, do we create more styling tools to promise more manageability that they can only utilize 24hrs in advance and/or collect dust in storage? or do we provide ways for them to tuck their transitioning styles away within a headwrap fabric until a more suitable length has grown over time?
]]>
This is one of the most common misconceptions believed by individuals within the curly hair community. The truth is, our hair shafts are dead once they leave the scalp. Therefore, growing a long, healthy mane starts with a healthy scalp. Still, trimming your hair once every 3-6 months is recommended in order to ensure maximum length retention and prevent further damage to the hair, especially if you have split ends. Your hair will still grow with split ends, however, neglecting them for too long will hinder the presence of any length gained resulting in dry, brittle ends that can make detangling and styling much more challenging and eventually lead to hair loss.
As stated earlier, every texture is unique and therefore requires a different regimen to address our personal hair needs. Although your texture might fit within a category of commonly recognized hair textures, it is just a reference for comparison of hair type. While two different people might share the same category of hair texture, their individual textures and makeup are still different, taking into consideration porosity level, for example, which would require a customized hair care routine.

]]>Many know lavender oil for its naturally soothing scent along with its many other uses relating to stress relief. Low and behold, it can also be paired with your favorite carrier oil (such as Coconut or Haitian Black Castor Oil) for dandruff relief.
Besides its minty clean scent, Peppermint oil is also a great addition to your favorite carrier oil as it helps with follicle stimulation as well as providing relief for symptoms of a dry scalp. Did I mention it also makes your hair feel and smell minty clean?
Black Castor Oil is highly considered over other carrier oils (next to Avocado oil) for its promotion of unbelievable hair growth and moisture retention. Although some don’t prefer to use BCO for its nutty aroma it can easily be masked by mixing it with just a few drops of good smelling oils like Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, or Lavender (with good proportion). Whether you choose to purchase Haitian or Jamaican derived Black Castor Oil is up to personal preference. However, it is important to purchase authentic Black Castor Oil for optimal results.
We’ve all heard of the many potential benefits carrots provide when ingested due to their high Vitamin A content, fiber and other nutrients our body needs. These benefits also apply when applying the seed-derived oil topically to the hair and scalp. When applied to the scalp, this oil’s uniquely high amounts of beta-carotene and biotin work to help combat thinning around the edges as well as premature greying of the hair. Work a small amount of carrot seed oil throughout the hair for a natural SPF to protect against heat damage as well as reduce humidity-induced frizz.
Rose oil is another holy grail oil that’s great for promoting healthy skin and hair! Its natural production of antioxidant farnesol helps to regulate an oily scalp while providing moisture retention. Its antimicrobial properties also help to soothe inflammation due to a dry scalp. If tea tree oil is too harsh, consider rose oil as a gentler alternative for the same benefits.
